More comparison between China earthquake and US Katrina hurricane responses:Why do the media constantly compare the rescue and relief operations between China and Myanmar? Let's compare China with the US:In China, an earthquake that registered 8.0 struck with no warning. The Premier was on the plane to the disaster centre 90 minutes later to co-ordinate the rescue and relief effort; local, provincial and national and military authorities immediately ordered an all-out rescuing effort, no arguments, no buck passing. Airports and buildings were evacuated in little over 30 minutes and police and emergency workers swung into action at about the same time. Soldiers poured into the diaster sites by planes, trucks and, where the roads were damaged, by walking for hours. Victims helped themselves and others where they could; everything was orderly; no chaos, no looting, no crimes and no unreasonable demands, knowing at times of crisis, action, understanding and unity is the best for all.In the US, a hurricane struck after 48 hours warning. The President reluctantly terminated his holidays one and a half days after the diaster struck; the Secretary of States was seen in New York shopping for designer shoes while people waited for help. Rescue and relief efforts were slow and ineffective. The state Governor blames the Federal and the Federal blames the state; the mayor blames everybody else. Four days after the diaster, troops armed to the teeth appeared on the street in their Humvees, not there to rescue anybody but to maintain law and order and shoot looters. Many police officers wanted to quit or retire early.I hope this diaster will prompt some in the west who have long hold a deep bias and prejudice against China to rethink. Is democracy a be all, end all thing? If not, let China evolve by its own accord and in its own pace.Original video:http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4860392

Jun 7, 2008 - kingofusers; if what you say is true, why is it that where primary schools collapsed and killed many children, the buildings right next to the school were fine. i also have friends in sichuan who say that schools fell and next to the school there is a hotel where nothing happened to it. schools for the rich kids didn:t fall. government buildings didn:t fall. the government didn:t protect the children. they only protected themselves.

burger1376 Says:

Jun 7, 2008 - dooooooohh; the same question to you. why is it that the schools fell, but government buildings and hotels didn:t. because the government in sichuan used the money for fixing the unsafe schools for their own benefit. china could have prevented many of the deaths of those children but they didn:t. I don:t think the bush administration cares about the american people, but it is obvious that in sichuan the government did not protect those children.

burger1376 Says:

Jun 7, 2008 - kingofusers; even if you watch chinese news, they say that many sichuan people warned against the unsafe schools, but the government officials ignored it. also, they said that they will punish those who were responsible for the unsafe schools. You are spreading lies, the government is responible for all those child deaths. i personally think both the chinese government and the bush administration only care about themselves and money. I, at least, can be equal in my criticism unlike you.

yeslcc Says:

Jun 8, 2008 - Chinese Gov. really have keen sense of responsibility

doooooohh Says:

Jun 8, 2008 - sichuan goverment???? as you know china is big.... how do you want goverment to control all buildings????... ...

leejordanmichael Says:

Jun 13, 2008 - burger 1376, the government responded when the death toll was still in the hundreds. its 70 fold now. wen jiabao got to the earthquake area within hours while george bush only claimed to have instructed his pilot to fly low over new orleans so he have a look.

leejordanmichael Says:

Jun 13, 2008 - or shall i say the central govt responded well. its been alleged that local govt officials stopped parents from going into some school compounds to search for their kids. to use "the goverment" in china is too much of a generalization.

Aubbieuni Says:

Jun 13, 2008 - I was in Katrina. I can say it was horrible, not just in New O. but also in Miss. through Florida. Many people died, were displaced, and the U.S government showed the least amount of concern they could muster. It was civilians from other states that helped the most. However, China faces a different catastrophe. The amount of people dead is incredible and overwhelmingly sad. I cannot place blame until the people are safe and on their way to recovery, which will take years to repare emotionally.

beautifulprincessM Says:

Jun 15, 2008 - Katina never forget

beautifulprincessM Says:

Jun 15, 2008 - Does anyone know how many people were killed or died because of Katrina? Like we know 2700 people lost their lives on 9/11. What about Katrina

CherryBlossom883 Says:

Jun 17, 2008 - I feel so poor of China this year, I mean it's 2008 Olmpics thing well manily I feel sad because I am chinese!

abudabit Says:

Jun 17, 2008 - 50,000 people died in an earthquake in China which in other countries would have killed just a few people. Japan was hit by an earthquake 10 times as powerful. How many died in Katrina? 50 people? LOL, Chinese are such fools. I guess this is how China does population control. They need an earthquake like this every day of the year, maybe the country won't be so crowded any more. Or how about a 0 child policy? Yank out the babies from the womb and throw them in the trashcan. LOL, China.

dud3man6969 Says:

Jun 17, 2008 - Most of the blame for the human suffering in LA during Katrina is squarely with the local and state officials. They should have declared a state of emergency when the other effected states did and evacuated the people by any means necessary. But no, they waited until it was got just about as bad as it could have possibly gotten. The 14 year old kid who stole the school bus and drove it full of people to TX had more sense then all the state and local officials combined. He got it.

Jun 21, 2008 - 1,836 of our citizens died as a result of Hurricane Katrina... I was shocked with I learned this. I always knew it was hundreds, but that number just blew me away.

beautifulprincessM Says:

Jun 21, 2008 - Thank you I will make note of the number. Im shocked too

china1fan Says:

Jun 23, 2008 - Agree. China has done a great job in this disaster. USA under Bush has done the worst job

fremandn Says:

Jun 24, 2008 - The US had more warning than the Chinese. There needn't have been any fatalities from the hurricane. There is no excuse for this huge difference in response time.

doooooohh Says:

Jun 27, 2008 - China govement isnt that bad as you think in western... they depends on the chinese population so they gotta do a good job or they will get fired

doooooohh Says:

Jun 27, 2008 - us army are good to kill innocent people and invade other countries without the arcept from international...

china1fan Says:

Jun 30, 2008 - How do you fire the Chinese government? Please entertain me.

shijieheping123 Says:

Jul 11, 2008 - @abudabitThe earthquake in China was more powerful than Japan's. In China it hit the country's most populated province, while in Japan it was a more remote region. 1,836 died in Katrina. If the US gov was in charge of this quake then millions would've died. But you wouldn't know that bcz you're just a stupid little troll, right?

nemasen Says:

Jul 13, 2008 - by going into the chinese political system and climbing the ladder yourself.

cruisedragon Says:

Jul 14, 2008 - i m glad that the Chinese president came to the quake zone in 90 minutes to access the situation while president bush took like a week to access Katrina and the midwest

china1fan Says:

Jul 14, 2008 - To defeat the system, you must be part of the system? That's deep.
