A provocative and suspenseful drama, “BRIDESHEAD REVISITED” tells an evocative story of forbidden love and the loss of innocence set in the pre-WWII era. In the film, Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode, “Match Point,” “The Lookout”) becomes entranced with the noble Marchmain family, first through the charming and provocative Sebastian Flyte(Ben Whishaw, “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”), and then his sophisticated sister, Julia (Hayley Atwell, “Cassandra’s Dream” and the upcoming “The Duchess”). The rise and fall of Charles’ infatuations reflect the decline of a decadent era in England between the wars. Academy Award-winner Emma Thompson co-stars as Lady Marchmain. The film, based on Evelyn Waugh’s acclaimed novel is adapted for the screen by multiple BAFTA Award-winner Andrew Davies (“Bridget Jones Diary,” “Bleak House”) and Jeremy Brock (“The Last King of Scotland”) and directed by Julian Jarrold (“Becoming Jane”).

May 12, 2008 - What dreadful ROT.Stick with the TV version, folks...

stamm2002 Says:

May 12, 2008 - This is a totally inaccurate interpretation of the novel. If the screenwriters had read just a small amount of background on Evelyn Waugh's thesis for the novel (how divine grace acts on a diverse group of characters) they would realize this is a bastardized interpretation of the book. They likely just sold out for a hollywood-ized version to sell tickets, but viewers should know this appears to be a cheap counterfeit of the actual story.

May 12, 2008 - You're so right. To a Brideshead admirer it really is almost painful to see "Lady Marchmain" reduced to some sort of soap-opera villainess, or Julia hysterically accusing Charles of trying to "get" her and the house... I mean, come on! Waugh's novel is a work of art, it should have been treated with some respect

May 12, 2008 - Amen, brother! I was so excited before I saw the trailer and now I really don't think I want to see the film, much though I love Emma Thompson.

May 12, 2008 - Ha, just thought: it's the story from Anthony Blanche's point of view! *shudder*

May 16, 2008 - I agree - this looks awful. Nothing could ever match the faithfulness of the 1980s tv adaptation anyway, but this is entirely inaccurate. For starters, Sebastian's alcoholism is never put down to Charles's relationship with Julia - he starts going off the rails long before they even get together. Terrible terrible.
