The term 'free cinema' was coined by critic and filmmaker Lindsay Anderson in early 1956 when he Karel Reisz Tony Richardson and Lorenza Mazzetti showed a programme of their short films at the National Film Theatre. Although the name was intended only for that screening it proved so successful that five more programmes were shown under the same banner between 1956 and 1959. ; ; The films were 'free' in the sense that they were made outside the framework of the film industry and that their statements were entirely personal. Of the six screenings three showed short British documentaries while the other three showed new foreign films. ; ; 'Free Cinema' as it is understood today however specifically refers to the films made by Anderson's group and it is these films which form the basis of this collection. These films had in common not only the conditions of their production (low budget unpaid crew) and the equipment they employed (hand-held 16mm cameras) but a style and attitude. Mostly funded by the BFI's Experimental Film Fund they featured ordinary mostly working-class people at work and play displaying a rare and sympathy and respect and a self-consciously poetic style. They also shared an experimental approach to sound avoiding narration and imaginatively counter pointing sound and image. ; ; Film List: ; ; O DreamlandMomma Don't AllowTogetherWakefield ExpressNice TimeThe Singing StreetEvery Day Except ChristmasRefuge EnglandEnginemenWe Are The Lambeth BoysFood For A BushOne Potato Two PotatoThe Vanishing StreetTomorrow's SaturdayGala DayMarch to Aldermaston ;

At 6pm on April 20th 1992 Roger Taylor Brian May and John Deacon the surviving members of Queen took the stage of London's Legendary Wembley Stadium to announce the start of one of the biggest events in rock history organised by Queen themselves to pay tribute to their former colleague – the incomparable Freddie Mercury. The atmosphere of emotion mixed joy and sadness shared by stadium audience worldwide television viewers and performers alike was an experience that will never be forgotten. ; ; Queen had invited some of the greatest musical talent in the world to join them in paying tribute to Freddie who tragically dies of AIDS on 24th November 1991. The aim of the concert was to celebrate Freddie's life and work but also to increase public awareness of the awful disease which prematurely ended his life. A bonus result was a huge and still growing sum of money raised by the event and it's spin-off which has provided funds to help fight AIDS worldwide ever since. All the guests artists offered their participation for free. The concert was broadcast live on television and radio in 76 countries from the USA to Russia and all proceeds then and now go to the Mercury Phoenix trust a charity formed at the time whose charter is the relief of suffering from AIDS throughout the World. The 72 000 people who were fortunate enough to see the concert live did so in glorious Spring weather in front of a stage 370ft wide and 90 ft deep. The stage was flanked by scaffolding towers over 80ft tall and crowned at the centre of the proscenium arch by a gigantic Phoenix – a symbol from Queen's crest designed by Freddie in 1969 and now the emblem of the Mercury Phoenix Trust. The second half of the event featuring Brian Roger and John joined a glittering array of guests vocalists and players is captured here on specially remastered Digyal Video with surround sound. In addition the DVD contains many extras including unseen rehearsal and backstage footage ; ; Tracklist: ; ; 1. Tie Your Mother Down – Queen Joe Elliott and Slash ; 2. Anything goes when wannabe animator Gord Brody leaves the safety of his parents' basement to make it big in Hollywood and meet the paraplegic nymphomaniac of his dreams. With lots of hilarious scenes – and so many reasons to be offended – it's no wonder people can't stop talking about 'Freddy Got Fingered'.

Gobble-gobble…we accept her…one of us goes the haunting chant of Freaks. Yet it would be decades before this widely banned morality play gained acceptance as a cult masterpiece. ; ; Tod Browning (1931's Dracula) directs this landmark movie in which the true freaks are not the story's sideshow performers but "normals" who mock and abuse them. Browning a former circus contortionist cast real-life sideshow professionals. A living torso who nimbly lights his own cigarette despite having no arms or legs microcepalics (whom the film calls "pinheads") – they and others play the big-top troupers who inflict a terrible revenge on a trapeze artist who treats them as subhumans. In 1994 Freaks was selected for the National Film Registry's archive of cinematic treasures.
